How it works

Three steps. Your scraps. Our mess. New Life.

Compost bucket delivery

1We drop off a bucket

You get a clean, sealed, tight-lid, square 4-gallon bucket delivered to your door. Plus bokashi bran to keep things fresh and odor-free.

Kitchen pail with approved scraps

2You fill it up

Toss in approved scraps throughout the week. Sprinkle a bit of bokashi bran on top after adding scraps to eliminate odors.

Yes: Fruit & veg scraps, coffee & tea, paper waste.
No: Meat, dairy, plastic, excessive fats, oils or liquids, pet waste.

Bucket swap on pickup day

3We swap it weekly

Set your bucket out before pickup day. We grab the full one and leave a clean one. Subscribers get finished compost back every spring and fall!

Different scraps want different homes

New Life Soils routes organic material based on producing the best output: hot compost, worm castings, fungal-rich leaf mold, or specialty blends.

Worm bins

Best for: coffee grounds, soft plant scraps, and carefully balanced carbon.

Produces: highly nutritious and biologically active vermicastings. Perfect for seedlings, garden beds, and soil biology. Makes excellent compost tea.

"Cold" fungal pile

Best for: Spent brewing grains, leaves, wood chips, mushroom substrate, and other carbon-rich inputs.

Produces: loamy, fungally dominant, foresty, peat moss-like compost. Excellent for trees, shrubs, perennials, lawns, succulents and potting mixes.

We track each system with sensor technology.

Every batch is logged and monitored continuously for temperature and moisture. Ensuring our pile gets hot enough to sterlize seeds and kill pathogens. Also this data tells us when to turn, when the pile is ready for the next stage, and when the curing is done. The data tells us, not the calendar.

What this means for customers

  • Cleaner buckets: bokashi bran reduces odor before pickup, sealed lids contain odors and keep pests out
  • Better finished compost: inputs are balanced and verified with sensor data.
  • Local soil and amendments with real process notes made from local inputs.

FAQ

Do you accept meat or dairy?
For restaurants, yes! We accept just about everything with some small exceptions. Please reach out for a custom quote. For residents, not yet! We're piloting a Meat+ option. Add "Meat+ waitlist" in your signup notes to be first in line.
What about the smell or pests?
Every bucket comes with bokashi bran. Just sprinkle a handful on top after adding scraps. It eliminates odor, prevents fruit flies, and kick starts the composting process while outcompeting the smelly bad bacteria and mold. Combined with weekly swaps and our sealed bucket, smell and pests are a non-issue.
What do I get back?
Two compost returns per year. One in spring and one in fall, timed for gardening season. Monitored and tested, biologically active living compost made from your neighborhood's inputs.
What is bokashi bran?
Bokashi bran is a grain inoculated with beneficial microbes. Sprinkling it on your scraps introduces good bacteria that outcompete the bad bacteria. This eliminates odors, prevents fruit flies, and jump-starts the composting process before we even pick up your bucket. It's included free with every subscription. No other local service offers this.
How is this different from other composting services?
We're hyperlocal, gardener-led, and engineer-run with soil-first standards. Your scraps never leave Kent. They become next year's soil. We include bokashi bran with every bucket (no other local service does this), and every batch is tracked and monitored so you know exactly what's in your soil and where it came from.
Can I pause or cancel?
Anytime. No contracts. Month-to-month payments. Try it out, risk free.
What if I miss a pickup?
We'll grab it on the next scheduled pickup. Need a special reschedule? $10 — but your first reschedule is on us.
